Well, I still feel very new to this YouTube channel thing. I am trying different things to try and get the attention of the algorithm. While Youtube Shorts seem like similar to Instagram reels, I am not sure whether or not the same strategies work for both. My current practice is to post a Short and/or Reel to preview my original songs. Here is an example:
A few days later, I upload the full song, usually on both platforms. I am still figuring out the difference between Shorts and full videos as far as their viewer rate goes. I think shorts are a really cool idea, but I am more familiar with YouTube as a platform for full-length (that is, several-minute long) videos. For example, here is the full song on YouTube:
I think doing things this way is fun if nothing else. The minute I stop entertaining myself, none of this is worth it, but I do try to grow my footprint as much as possible.
Another thing I tried recently was leaving comments on bigger pages. I should do this more often. The first time I tried it, I saw that a video had just been posted on Elise Ecklund’s YouTube channel. It seems to me that the type of people that watch that channel are part of my target audience. I would say she puts a lot of emphasis on comedy, but she definitely has a music focus with sort of a lighthearted feel, which is how I would describe myself. So I thought if I could get the attention of her followers, I might start to see some significant growth.
Anyway, I open up the video, and (spoiliezzz) one of the first things she said was, “Am I the next 23 Pilots?” The name of the group is of course, Twenty Øne Piløts, but the character in her sketch was apparently confused. After watching the entire video and thinking about it for a minute, I left the following comment on the video:
“By the next 23 pilots, do you mean the successor to TØP? Or are you contemplating adding the next 23 to their 21 resulting in 44 pilots, because that could get interesting.”
In my honest opinion, if that comment were on Reddit, it probably would get a lot of upvotes. Either YouTube is different from what I’m used to, or I am just not that funny. But I think I’m funny, and again, this is something I am doing for fun. As long as I am having a good time, I consider it a success. Not that I don’t appreciate any audience or readers that like my content. If that’s you, stick around and we’ll keep having fun!
