Okay, so I am not necessarily just beginning, I have been at this thing for a few years now. But as I am sure many artists have experienced, it can be confusing and discouraging trying to figure out how much time is appropriate to spend on booking gigs and what moves are even the best ones to make. Even when I work hard at it, I sometimes feel like my efforts are pointless. I learn something new every day, but there are still many questions I do not feel like I have answered. To name just a few:
- Is it better to call a venue you want to play, or is an email fine?
- Is going to the open mics really worth all the time and money?
- Would venues engage me more if my demos were better?
- I have a lot of demos, but should I be using different ones?
- How do I know if a specific venue will fit my style?
These are all big questions that I continue to answer as I go through this journey and I hope to write more blog posts on the topics as I continue to figure them out. If I cannot answer the questions themselves, I can at least give my thoughts and where I currently stand. There is also a lot more that goes into being a musician (technique, theory, analysis of other music, etc.) and I am sure I will be writing blogs about those things along the way. I hope my documentation of this journey is intriguing and even helpful to other artists out there.
